The Vampire

There have been times

In recent history

When culturally

And collectively

We were obsessed with vampires

It seems to have shifted in recent years

As if we wore out the fantasy

In one of the movies about vampires

That we worshiped as a culture

The young woman

That played the star role

As the oldest female vampire

Even died

I believe that in Hollywood

Some roles in movies

Become overly worshipped or feared

Obsessed about and observed too deeply

And the star player can suffer

This happened with the young girl

In the poltergeist movies years ago

In the vampire movie

Where the actress died

Shortly after creating the movie

It may have been just a little too close

To ancient and dangerous magic

That should not have been touched

And she paid, we all paid

These are tragedies

But seem to hold some significance

We were pretty wrapped up in their roles

It was intense

And somehow

There seemed to be ancient truth and myth

To the roles they played

So what is evil?

Is the devil real?

We can all agree that vampires

Are evil, but also

That they do not really exist

Then why so potent?

Why so intoxicating?

As humans in our futuristic reality

I believe we long to connect

To something ancient

In our blood and ancient histories

Vampires, the fantasy

Seem to satisfy this hunger

In ancient times

Humans believed in human sacrifice

I believe that on some level

The earth does respect our blood

In ancient times

Spilling human blood on the earth

Was a regular occurrence

We may not be obsessed

With vampires anymore

But there is always a cult following

To the genre of horror

I do not participate in this much

As I am sensitive to fantasies

That are disturbing

But I could always handle

The fantasy of the vampire

It is poetic, it is subtle

It speaks to longings

Such as desire and love

The dream to live forever

I believe our souls do live forever

I believe in reincarnation

It is possible that this was part

Of the original fable

But feeding off of other humans?

I believe that this could be referring to

Codependency, or power

Vampires historically

Are very powerful

They lord over the human race in secret

Some carry the fantasy

Into reality, and believe they are real

But they are not

Still evil may be

We need a vehicle

To think about and process

The evil that exists on this planet

Vampires seem to do this

In a poetic and even redeemable way

The soul-less, with eternal life

Almost impossible to kill

They drink the blood of humans

They may be undead

But they have the capacity to love

They may not have souls

But they walk and talk like us

Oh, and they can fly

Of course, everyone wants to fly

And to live forever
